Another victim was rescued and now receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital in the city. Vanguard gathered that the deceased persons and survivor of the collapsed building were homeless residents in Aba who usually take refuge in open buildings and similar structures. As at the time, Vanguard visited the area, there was no excavator equipment to help rescue efforts. However, sympathizers managed to wade in through some open parts of the collapsed building to rescue the survivor. Some sympathizers left the scene as hoodlums attacked those taking pictures with their phones. A shop owner in the area said the incident happened on early hours of Wednesday as the building was still under construction as he closed for business, Tuesday. He said; “The building was still standing when I closed for business Tuesday. Constr...

Welcome to Grousehog Day: is England doomed to relive the last six months forever? Joel Golby

Image
Grouse-shooting parties are exempt from the new ban on gatherings – but that doesn’t stop this feeling eerily like March   I had a fairly unsettling feeling of deja vu this week when the Conservative government started slowly easing the country back into the not too distant past as Covid-19 case numbers started rising again, reliving, beat for beat, the sloppy carnage of the month of March (remember that?) out here in good old conkers-and-hot-choc September. I suppose this is the long-term plan for coronavirus management, until a vaccine happens: run every six months on a loop, dip the whole country into an uneasy quasi-lockdown and then slowly bring it out of it again, forbidding anyone from leaving the house one week, and then, as close as possible, legally demanding they go to the pub again the next. The tide follows the moon. I wonder where Dominic Cummings will drive to this time? I wonder which day we’ll designate for the NHS clap? Which previously unknown 100...

If we don't find life on planets like Venus, doesn't it make us that bit more special? Charles Cockell

The discovery of phosphine in the planet’s atmosphere is part of our long search to understand our place in the universe 👆An image of Venus using data from Nasa’s Magellan spacecraft and Pioneer Venus Orbiter. Photograph: NASA/Reuters  T he recent detection of phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus, the excitement around several spacecraft currently bound for Mars and discoveries of distant rocky Earth-sized exoplanets fuel an optimism about extraterrestrial life. However, despite the promise, there are good reasons to be cautious. We should be ready to embrace the possible discovery of a lack of alien life as a scientific triumph in our understanding of our place in the universe. https://succypresh.blogspot.com/2020/09/scientists-find-gas-linked-to-life-in.html Throughout modern history, humanity has never quite let go of the idea of aliens in the cosmos. When, in the late 18th century, William Herschel declared that the craters on the moon were the “works of ...

Scientists find gas linked to life in atmosphere of Venus

Image
Phosphine, released by microbes in oxygen-starved environments, was present in quantities larger than expected Life existing in Venus’s atmosphere is improbable as it includes clouds of 90% sulphuric acid. Photograph: ISAS/JAXA Traces of a pungent gas that waft through the clouds of Venus may be emanations from aerial organisms – microbial life, but not as we know it. Astronomers detected phosphine 30 miles up in the planet’s atmosphere and have failed to identify a process other than life that could account for its presence. The discovery raises the possibility that life gained a foothold on Earth’s inner neighbour and remnants clung on – or floated on, at least – as Venus suffered runaway global warming that made the planet hellish. For 2bn years, Venus was temperate and harboured an ocean. But today, a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere blankets a near-waterless surface where temperatures top 450C. The clouds in the sky are hardly inviting, containing droplets of 90% sulphuric a...
